CONCRETE MASONARY UNITS (BLOCK)

2 core limestone (2/C) a standard weight concrete masonry building unit meeting ASTM   C 90 - with a cubic foot density of 125 pounds per cubic foot or more and a load capacity of 1900 pounds per square inch - equivalent to a 60 ton total load - Beavertown's standard weight concrete masonry building units normally test at 135 pounds per cubic foot and in excess of 2800 pounds per square inch - equivalent to a 85 ton total load

2 core Beavalite (2/C-BA) a medium weight concrete masonry building unit meeting ASTM C 90 - with a cubic foot density between 105 to 125 pounds per cubic foot and a load capacity of 1900 pounds per square inch - equivalent to a 60 ton total load - Beavertown's medium weight concrete masonry building units normally test at 118 pounds per cubic foot and in excess of 2500 pounds per square inch - equivalent to a 75 ton total load

2 core Haydite (2/C-HA) a lightweight concrete masonry building unit meeting ASTM C 90 - with a cubic foot density of less than 105 pounds per cubic foot and a load capacity of 1900 pounds per square inch - equivalent to a 60 ton total load   Beavertown's lightweight concrete masonry building units normally test at 103 pounds per cubic foot and in excess of 2200 pounds per square inch - equivalent to a 66 ton total load

  • L corner (LC) a specially manufactured concrete masonry unit manufactured to allow 4", 6", 10", or larger concrete masonry unit to turn a 90º corner without cuttingor using multiple pieces - this allows for the outward appearance of the masonry wall to maintain a running bond pattern
  • mine block (MB) a 4" tongue and groove concrete masonry unit usually used in mining applications but can be used in conventional masonry applications
  • open bottom knock out bond beam (OBKOBB) used to pour a continuous band of concrete around a building allowing for vertical steel to penetrate into the concrete of the bond beam and the concrete to flow into the cores of the concrete masonry units below the bond beam
  • closed bottom knock out bond beam (CBKOBB) used to pour a continuous band of  concrete around the building not allowing the concrete to get into the cores of the concrete masonry units below the bond beam
  • u bond beam (UBB) a bond beam shaped as a u allowing for one continuous band of concrete around a building - always produced with a solid bottom - not used in masonry construction as much today - replaced by the (OBKOBB/CBKOBB) listed above
  • w bond beam (WBB) a bond beam with a center divider allowing for two continuous bands of concrete around a building normally produced with a solid bottom in a 12" unit 
  • pier (P) a concrete masonry unit used for building pilasters or ending walls at windows or doors etc.
  • Radial (Ŕ) a specially engineered concrete masonry unit designed to allow various radius to be laid without requiring a saw to maintain the correct mortar joint spacing12" Radial concrete masonry units can lay a 12' diameter circle
  • sash (S) a concrete masonry unit used for placing residential windows in foundation walls or control joints in masonry walls
  • solid (SO) a concrete masonry unit which is 100% solid used for capping walls or where you may need to stop concrete, masonry fill etc. from penetrating any further down the cores of the concrete masonry unit - also used to build chases in masonry walls - in this case you would normally be using 2" solids
  • splittable (SP) a concrete masonry unit with a slot in the center web which allows the unit to be cut into a half unit easily without the use of a saw
  • vertical score (VS) a 3x8"x3/8" vertical score on the 8"x16" face of a concrete masonry unit which appears as you have laid a 8"x8" bond pattern - multiple scores can be put on the concrete masonry unit face allowing for various architectural appearances - the most common would be 1, 3, or 7 vertical scores
  • 45º angle (45) a concrete masonry unit manufactured with a 45º angle allowing for easier installation of bow windows in residential foundations or wherever a 45º angle may be needed
  • 75% solid (75) a concrete masonry unit which is 75% solid - used where more structural integrity may be needed in a wall or for a four hour fire rating in an 8" concrete masonry unit

  • other concrete masonry unit fire ratings can be achieved for specific project requirements as fire ratings are a direct correlation between equivalent thickness of the concrete masonry unit and the type of aggregate used
  • loose fill insulation (poured into the concrete masonry cores can achieve an increase in the normal fire rating of the concrete masonry unit wall also grouting or filling the concrete masonry unit cores with sand will do the same - although any remodeling afterwards may release the loose fill insulation or sand in the concrete masonry unit cores negating any increase in fire rating achieved in the initial construction of the concrete masonry unit wall
