LEADERSHIP IN ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN (LEED)

BEAVERTOWN BLOCK CO., INC. VERDE™ (LEED) CONCRETE MASONRY UNITS

Beavertown Block Co., Inc. has developed a concrete masonry unit using recycled aggregates for our many customers who would like to design/build green.  We can offer the concrete masonry unit (cmu) in standard concrete masonry units (cmu's) for general building purposes including cmu residential walls, above grade cmu's etc.  We also can offer the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design LEED™ green (VERDE™) cmu's in a variety of common finishes.  Such as standard cmu's, textured face cmu's, split face cmu's, palisade (burnished/ground face) cmu's, savanna stone (shotblasted) cmu's etc.  We normally produce the LEED™ green VERDE™ cmu's with a 40% recycled content for commercial construction.  We can however vary the recycled content to meet specific project requirements.

Residential cmu foundation or above grade walls come under different guidelines to obtain the LEED™ points necessary to qualify as a green building than do commercial construction projects.  For a residential foundation to qualify for LEED™ points the cmu's must be produced using fifty (50%) percent pre consumer recycled aggregate or twenty-five (25%) percent post consumer aggregate.  The concrete masonry unit manufacturer must adhere to strict documentation guidelines to keep the concrete masonry units in compliance with the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).  Beavertown Block Co., Inc. is taking the lead in producing consumer friendly green VERDE™ cmu's which when used in your foundation will allow you the homeowner to qualify for the LEED™ points you are looking for.  With full knowledge the VERDE™ cmu's meet the current American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standard C90.

In our typical standard cmu production, at all three producing operations, we use at a minimum 2.22% recycled LEED™ content aggregate at all times.  If you are considering using an alternative foundation system such as poured concrete or pre cast foundation walls under your new home concrete masonry units will allow you to be more green in your decision.  Concrete masonry units are sixty-five (65%) percent more efficient in the use of portland cement per yard of mixed concrete in their dry slump concrete mix.  By using concrete masonry units you will be building greener than alternative residential foundations systems and isn't that what it is all about.

We also have a crusher on site which allows us the ability to crush waste cmu's (block) for recycling back into our standard cmu production.  In the 87 years Beavertown Block Co., Inc. has been in business, we are proud to say we have never hauled our waste cmu's into a commercial landfill.

In our 87 years in business we have never produced a cmu using chemicals or other like products which would be considered potentially hazardous to the environment.  In fact we recently had a sample of our waste cmu sent to a testing lab to determine that the waste cmu's contained no hazardous substances which would be dangerous to the environment.

IF YOU LIKE MANY PEOPLE TODAY ARE CONCERNED ABOUT OUR ENVIRONMENT, YOU CAN REST ASSURED BY REQUESTING THAT VERDE™ GREEN LEED™ CMU'S FROM BEAVERTOWN BLOCK CO., INC. BE USED BY YOUR BUILDER YOU HAVE DONE YOUR PART IN PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT WHILE BUILDING YOUR NEW HOME OR ADDITION ON THE BEST PRODUCT AVAILABLE FOR RESIDENTIAL FOUNDATION CONSTRUCTION.

VERDE™ GREEN LEED™ CMU'S FROM BEAVERTOWN BLOCK CO., INC. WHILE BEING ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY ARE ALSO VERY AFFORDABLE.  VERDE™ GREEN LEED™ CMU'S BUILD BETTER FOUNDATIONS (BASEMENTS) IN MORE THAN ONE WAY.

WE AT BEAVERTOWN BLOCK CO., INC. WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR ASKING FOR VERDE™ GREEN LEED™ CMU'S.  WE, LIKE YOU, ARE DOING WHAT WE CAN TO HELP IMPROVE OUR WORLD BY MANUFACTURING A CMU WHICH HELPS REDUCE OUR DEPENDENCE ON NATURAL QUARRIED AGGREGATES. WITH YOUR HELP WE CAN PROTECT OUR COMMUNITY AND PASS ON TO OUR CHILDREN A RESPECT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT. POTENTIAL LEED™ POINTS (CREDITS)

The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) created a system to evaluate the effects of building designs and construction methods within the current environment--Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED™).  The use of VERDE™ CMU'S can potentially help you obtain LEED™ points (credits) towards LEED™ certification for your project:

  • Materials & Resources (MRc4.1 & 4.2)--Recycled Content
VERDE™ CMU'S are manufactured with 50% pre-consumer recycle aggregate for residential construction.  Increasing to 60% can potentially enable the LEED™ project to achieve an innovation in Design point for exemplary performance.

VERDE™ CMU'S are typically manufactured with 40% pre-consumer recycled aggregates for commercial construction although the percentage can be altered to meet specific project requirements.  There would be a special LEED™ project team convened to address the LEED™ requirements for the project.  This team would be responsible for developing the LEED™ specifications for the project for all the contractors and suppliers.
  • Materials & Resources (MRc5.1 & 5.2)--Regional Materials
Projects located within a 500 mile radius of any of our three            manufacturing locations can potentially achieve valuable LEED™ points due to the fact that we generally use 75% or greater regionally extracted, harvested & manufactured materials in our dry slump concrete products mix in the production of VERDE™ CMU'S.  This allows for a potential innovation in Design point also.

  • VERDE™ CMU'S can potentially contribute to additional LEED™ points beyond the sections listed above.

Beavertown Block Co., Inc. is committed to recycling wherever possible and has implemented many programs for recycling waste products.

  1. CRUSHED CONCRETE MASONRY UNITS
Beavertown Block Co., Inc. has the ability to crush their unsalable cmu's and recycle the aggregate from the crushing process back into our current standard production process without any detrimental impact on the environment or the manufactured product – all the while conforming to ASTM standard specification.

  2. OLD CARDBOARD
We haul our old cardboard to a recycling center for proper disposal and recycling into new products.

  3. USED BATTERIES
We purchase new batteries from suppliers who have in place a recycling program to dispose of the old used batteries in the most environmentally friendly manner.

  4. USED CONTAINERS
We purchase as many of our admixtures, integral water repellants, pigments plasticizers, release agents as we can in 3000 pound totes which are recyclable back to the original manufacturer for reuse.

  5. USED 55 GALLON DRUMS
Some products we use in manufacturing still come in 55 gallon drums.  Due to the fact we do not use enough of these products in manufacturing during the course of a year’s time or are unavailable in the 3000 pound tote.  We do recycle the 55 gallon drums at an appropriate time when we have accumulated enough to make a trailer load to send back to the original manufacturer for reuse

  6. USED MOTOR OIL
We have installed a used oil burner in one of our maintenance shops for the purpose of using up our used motor oil in the heating of the facility. Therefore eliminating the need to purchase fuel oil for heating purposes. We therefore not only save the environment in our reduced demand for oil we recycle oil we would normally have to dispose of in some other fashion.

  7. USED STEEL/ALUMINUM PRODUCTS ETC.
We have our used steel and aluminum etc. hauled away by a local recycler for use in the production of new steel and aluminum products.

  8. USED TIRES
We haul our used tires to a tire recycler who has the expertise and ability to recycle used tires in the most environmentally friendly manner possible. In the past we stored the used tires here at the facility until such time as we could find a proper disposal recycling site.

  9. USED WOODEN PALLETS
We haul our unserviceable wooden pallets to a wood pallet recycler who chips up the wooden pallets into a variety of user friendly, recycled wood products.

  10. WASTE ANTIFREEZE
We only purchase antifreeze from vendors who have in place the proper recycling procedures for dealing with waste antifreeze.

  11. WASTE PARTS WASHER FLUIDS
We only purchase parts washer fluid from vendors who have in place the proper recycling procedures for dealing with waste parts washer fluids.
